How To remove a cisco switch from a stack

Firstly identify the switch you want to remove. You can do this by running “sh run” on the switch stack. You should get an output similar to the below.

In this instance I am looking to remove switch 4 (switch 4 provision ws-c3750g-48ts)

I suggest verifying that switch 4 is the switch you think it is by running “sh ip int bri” and comparing the active interfaces.

  • Power off the switch you want to remove.
  • Remove the stackwise cables and re-cable accordingly (i.e. so the remaining switches still have redundant connections)
  • Enter conf mode on the stack (conf t)
  • Enter the command no switch stack-member-number provision command.

(e.g. in the instance no switch 4  provision )

Once you are happy its all working don’t forget to save the configuration.
