Unknown Devices in Device Manager

Occasionally windows is unable to identify some hardware in a PC and the device is listed in device manager as unknown. This article explains how to troubleshoot this.

The quickest and easiest way is to select reinstall driver and use windows update to find the driver. This however doesn’t always work.

To manually find the device, in device manager right click on the ‘unknown device’ and select ‘properties’. Click on the details tab to reveal the Device instance ID string


 

 

 

 

 

The Vendor ID is: 8086 the Device ID is: 7111 (in this case)

http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php

and enter the ID’s into the fields shown below:
