Removing Ghost Adaptors after Virtualising a Machine

When re-entering the TCP/IP information after virtualising (e.g. a p2v using vmware convertor) a machine you may get the below error.

The IP address X.X.X.X you have entered for this network adapter is already assigned to another device XXXXX. X.X.X.X is hidden from the network connections folder because it is not physically in the computer. If the same address is assigned to both adapters and they both become active only one of them will use this address.

This is because the old network adaptor information is still present on the virtual machine. These are called ghost adaptors and can be removed by following the following steps.

Open an CMD prompt and enter the below commands

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

start devmgmt.msc

Device manager should open.

Go to view – show hidden devices.

Then uninstall each of the grayed out devices as shown below
